Nicole Fruge

Nicole Fruge began her photojournalism career in 1994 when she left the University of Houston to shoot for the Houston Press--the town's major news and entertainment weekly. Since then, she's worked for a number of other leading dailies including the Galveston County Daily News (Galveston, TX) and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune (Sarasota, FL) before joining the San Antonio Express-News (San Antonio, TX) as a staff photographer in April, 2003.

The "Shrimping in Peril" reportage was her first project for the Express-News. The story examined an industry threatened by high fuel costs and cheap imports. Fruge, a New Orleans native, was a natural choice for the assignment. She had spent the summers of her childhood trawling with her grandfather off the coast of Grande Isle, Louisiana. It turned out to be good training for the week she spent with shrimper Jeff Noel on the Gulf Knight shrimp boat in the middle of the Gulf Mexico. The photographs were taken over a five-month period in Texas and Brazil. The National Press Photographers Association awarded the series first place in the Nature and Environment picture story category of the Best of Photojournalism contest.
