Gary Braasch
Gary Braasch is a leading photojournalist of environmental issues, including conservation, biodiversity, field science, climate change and global warming. His photography stems from a deeply felt connection with nature and an ardent conservation ethic.
Whether climbing active volcanoes or harnessing himself to a forest canopy, Braasch is known for going to great lengths to get the picture he's looking for. It's not uncommon for him to employ techniques from aerial and underwater photography to macro close-ups in order to record the essence of entire ecosystems and threats to their biodiversity.
Well respected by editors and scientists alike, Braasch's articles and/or photo essays have graced the pages of many publications, including National Geographic, TIME, BBC Wildlife, Discover, Audubon, National Wildlife, Smithsonian, Scientific American, International Wildlife, Natural History, Animals, Outdoor Photographer, Orion, Photo District News and Wildlife Conservation.
His projects on ancient North America forests, Mount St. Helens, a single tropical tree, inside an Everglades alligator hole and tide pools resulted in major articles in LIFE magazine. Braasch has also reported on anaconda research in Venezuela, Great Smoky Mountains National Park biodiversity, the nesting of endangered wood storks in the Everglades, the threat of oil drilling in Alaska's arctic, rare plant rescue in Hawaii and tropical-forest studies in Peru.
In recent years, Braasch has focused on recording the impact of global warming. After visiting Antarctica in 1999, Braasch traveled to Canada's Baffin Island, the Great Barrier Reef, China, Florida and Alaska to supplement his reportage.
In 2003, Braasch received top honors from the North American Nature Photography Association, taking home the only national award for Outstanding Nature Photography. Braasch is an active contributor to environmental efforts ranging from forest preservation in his home state of Oregon to international conservation campaigns. ZUMA Press provides worldwide representation of his vibrant archive of detailed stock, nature and travel photography.
Gary Braasch books include: Entering the Grove, (Gibbs Smith, 1993);
Photographing the Patterns of Nature, (Amphoto, 1990); Secrets of the Old Growth Forest, (Gibbs Smith, 1990); and The Northwest: Pacific Coast and Cascades, (Rizzoli, 1988).
