Jim Gehrz


Jim Gehrz is a 20-year veteran of newspaper photojournalism whose powerful, in-depth human interest stories have earned him numerous awards and accolades.

Gehrz earned the designation of Photographer of the Year ten times [four times by the Minnesota News Photographers Association, six by the Wisconsin News Photographers Association, received the 2004 Scripps Howard Foundation Journalism Award for Photojournalism and one of his photographs from Super Bowl XXXII was honored as the Pro Football Hall of Fame Photograph of the Year. In 2005, Gehrz was named Newspaper Press Photographer of the Year by the National Press Photographers Association for his in-depth story on Jessica Clements, a U.S. soldier who suffered a severe brain injury in Iraq. This story headlined Stern's premiere issue of View Magazine, running across an unprecedented 14 pages.

Gehrz began his career at the Worthington Daily Globe in 1985 where he was named Minnesota Press Photographer of the Year. After leaving there, he spent nearly 14 years as a staff photographer at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel before returning to his home town of St. Paul in 1999 to work for St. Paul Pioneer Press. Gehrz joined the photo staff at the Minneapolis Star Tribune in February 2004.

Gehrz earned a degree in English at Hamline University in Minnesota.
