Allen Sullivan
Allen Sullivan's interest in photojournalism began as a teenager,
when he documented the punk rock culture of the 80s and early
90s in the southeastern United States. His empathy for the common man was born out of stints as a slate roofer, pizza cook, bassist, amateur bicycle racer and general ner-do-well.
Growing up, his interest in areas south of the U.S. was sparked by several journeys to Central America with his father. Since then he has traveled and worked in Guatemala, Honduras, Costa
Rica and the United Kingdom. In 2002, he spent several months in Guatemala studying Spanish so that he could improve his ability to communicate and gather information for his stories.
His human-interest stories and in-depth essays have been published by numerous U.S. and international media. Most recently, his reportage on Central American adoptions ran as a cover story in Facts, one of Switzerland's largest news magazines. Based in Athens (Ga.), Sullivan works is a staff photojournalist for the Banner-Herald daily. In 2003-4 he was honored with numerous Industry awards for his series on the emergence of gangs in north Georgia. Sullivan is a graduate of the University of Georgia's Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication. He is represented worldwide by ZUMA Press.
